About Us

The Flour Sack Apron is based in Anchorage, Alaska, and specializes in kuga. We use an old family recipe that traveled from Black Sea German settlements to the farmlands in North Dakota then up north to Alaska. Kuga is pronounced coo-gah and can also be referred to as "kuchen" which simply means cake in German. Kuga is no ordinary cake—this special treat is made of a semi-sweet custard housed on top of an enriched yeasted dough. We enjoy eating kuga plain or with a warm fruit compote on top. We hope you will enjoy our kuga as much as generations of our family have enjoyed it.

Pictured is Great-Grandma Elizabeth who traveled over from the Black Sea area and her daughters, the Schiele sisters. Grandma Rose, who taught us how to make kuga, is the one laying in the grass with sunglasses on.
